The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a first level supervisor and/or flight chief, providing
planning, directing, organizing, and exercising control over nonsupervisory employees assigned to the Security Forces Flight.

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • May be exposed to high levels of noise such as aircraft engines.
  • Incumbent will be exposed to the day-to-day dangers associated with law enforcement and security duties.
  • Recurring training is required to keep the incumbent knowledgeable on the updated specialized tactics,
    techniques and procedures necessary for preparation and response to catastrophic event, terrorist attacks and related threats to installations.
  • The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as running in pursuits or emergency responses, long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms and walking foot patrols in and around buildings. This position may require common physical characteristics and abilities and dexterity and the strength to pursue and detain uncooperative suspects. In addition, this position requires the ability to employ "infantry" small unit tactics involving fire and maneuver with rapid advancing movement between defensive positions while wearing protective gear for extended periods of time, as well as the ability to employ "Active Shooter" response tactics as a member of a small team.
  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must
    continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions. IAW, DoDI 3020-42, Defense Continuity Programs.
  • This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the
    accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations. Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
Requirements - Qualifications:
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS Police Series 0083.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service which includes knowledge of a body of laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-08 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Knowledge of applicable law enforcement and security AF, Federal and DoD rules, regulations, instructions, practices, principles and procedures including force protection, integrated base defense, anti-terrorism and physical security.
  2. Knowledge of safety, security, and EEO regulations, practices, and procedures.
  3. Knowledge of police officer procedures and operating methods to perform the full range of police officer activities independently to include protection level resources, installation entry control, armed response and dispatch.
  4. Ability to operate the Incident Management System and the Security Force Management Information System.
  5. Ability to plan, organizes, and directs the functions and staff of an organization.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
