Description:

The Supervisory Dental Laboratory Technician manages, controls, coordinates and supervises the fabrication of a variety of dental prosthetic work, which includes removable prosthetics, implants prosthetics, crown prosthetics, bridge prosthetics and full mouth rehabilitation prosthetics for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System's Dental Service.

This position is located at the North West San Antonio VA Clinic, 9939 State Hwy 151, San Antonio, TX 78251-1900

Requirements:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/19/2025.

Time-In-Grade Requirement : Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT (IOR):
Basic Requirement for an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met to qualify for entry into this occupational series 0683 for positions above the GS-04 grade level, and it is something that cannot be waived. In addition to the education and/or specialized experience below, applicants must meet the IOR for this position.
  • Specialized Experience: Applicants must have experience using dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; using laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; using precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and using construction of dental prosthetic appliances. In addition to the the basic requirement for the Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) above, applicants may qualify based on experience and/or education as described below:
  • Specialized Experience: Applicant must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal Service that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Dental Laboratory position. Examples of specialized experience include, but are limited to: collaborates and works with dental staff to construct, design, and fabricate dental or intra-oral maxillofacial appliances; utilizes dental laboratory materials, tools, instruments, and equipment to construct, design, fabricates, and makes adjustments to dental fixtures or appliances; consults with and makes recommendations to patients concerning their complaints regarding the esthetics of any dental prosthesis; researches latest materials and technology associated with prosthesis fabrication, modification or repair of dental prosthesis; and provides training to dental hygienists, dental assistants, volunteers, dental students, and dental residents regarding the use of materials, tools, equipment and techniques involved with dental laboratory duties.   • Education: Applicants must have successfully completed a master's degree; OR successfully completed two (2) full years of graduate level education leading to such a degree that included courses that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position (i.e., Dental Laboratory Technology, Dental Assisting, Dental Hygiene, Pre-Dentistry, Clinical Medical Assisting, Surgical Technology, etc.) in an accredited college, or university. ( Note : One-year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.). [TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED]
  • Combination: Applicants must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience directly related to the work of the of this position, which may be substituted to meet the experience requirements of the position. ( Note : Only graduate education beyond the first full year of graduate study (18 semester hours) is qualifying for the GS-09 grade level of this position when combining education and experience.) [For example, an applicant has 9 months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level and 2 ½ years of creditable graduate level education of this position. The applicant meets 75 percent of the required experience and 50 percent of the required education (i.e., the applicant has 1/2 year of graduate study beyond that is required for the GS-09 grade level). Therefore, the applicant exceeds the total requirement and is qualified for this position.]. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light dental items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity.

Preferred Experience:
  • CAD/CAM experience
  • 5+ years supervisory experience
  • Experience using GOVTA timekeeping software
  • 5+ years as a Dental Laboratory Technician
